How to Use TikTok to Grow Your Email List: A 5-Step Funnel

A TikTok view is a stranger deciding, for a second or two, that you’re worth watching. An email subscriber is the same person deciding they want to hear from you again. Everything in this guide is about the short walk between those two decisions, and how to make it so obvious that people take it without thinking twice.

The video above is How to Use TikTok to Grow Your Email List (watch on YouTube). I introduce myself in it as speaking with GetResponse. (Disclosure: I was GetResponse’s U.S. Brand Evangelist from 2024 to 2025.) It’s my commentary on how TikTok attention turns into website visits, not a test of any email software, and nothing on this page ranks or recommends a platform because of that relationship.

One part of the video has aged. It opens with the idea that TikTok might disappear in the United States, which reflects the period after Congress passed the Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act in April 2024 and the Supreme Court upheld it in January 2025. On January 23, 2026, TikTok announced a majority American-owned U.S. joint venture, so read that segment as history, not a current status update. I cover what that period meant for creators in email vs. social media. The rest of the advice doesn’t depend on a ban at all, and this post brings it up to date.

Why send TikTok viewers to an email list?

Because TikTok is built to introduce you to people who have never heard of you. TikTok’s own explanation of how it recommends content says the For You feed deliberately mixes in new creators and content, which is why a small account can reach viewers who don’t follow it. That makes TikTok one of the best discovery channels you can get without paying.

Discovery isn’t the same as a relationship, though. TikTok decides who sees your next video, and it keeps the audience data. An email list flips that: the subscriber asked to hear from you, and you can export the list and take it to another provider. The full argument is in owned vs. rented audiences. This post is the practical part: the five steps that move a viewer from the feed to your inbox.

What does the TikTok-to-email funnel look like?

Five steps, each with one job and one number. When signups stall, the table tells you which step to fix first.

The five steps from TikTok content to a confirmed email subscriber
StepIts one jobThe number to watch
    1. TikTok contentStop the scroll and make one promise worth following up on.Profile views (TikTok analytics)
    2. Bio linkSend every interested viewer to the same place.Bio link clicks (UTM-tagged visits in your web analytics)
    3. Landing pageRepeat the video’s promise and ask for one thing: an email address.Landing page conversion rate
    4. Permission-based signupGet a clear yes to the emails you plan to send.Confirmed subscribers
    5. Welcome emailDeliver the promise within minutes and set expectations.Welcome email clicks and early unsubscribes

Step 1: What kind of TikTok content earns the click?

In the video I compare TikTok to a dating app. People swipe fast and stop only on what grabs them in the first split second, whether that’s the opening frame or the sound. If the first moment doesn’t earn attention, nothing after it gets seen.

The second idea is the one most brands miss: people don’t open TikTok to be sold to. The content that travels falls into one of three jobs, and I’d still sort every video idea into one of them before filming:

    • Educate. Teach one skill or one fix the viewer can use today. In the video I suggest keeping it to 30 seconds or less.
    • Inspire. Show a change, a result or a story that makes someone want to share it or come back for more.
    • Entertain. Trends and sounds can help, but only if they fit you. Entertaining is subjective, and forced humor reads as forced.

Then connect the video to the list. The video earns attention; the next step has to feel like more of the same thing, not a change of subject. If a video teaches three ways to price a service, the email offer is the pricing worksheet, not a general newsletter. Say the next step out loud near the end, put it in the on-screen text and repeat it in the caption.

Comments are the other half. In the video I talk about answering the people who engage and pointing them to the link in your bio. A viewer who asked a question in the comments is the warmest lead you’ll get from TikTok, so the reply should answer the question and name the resource that goes deeper.

First, check you can add one. TikTok’s Support page says you can add a website link to your profile if you have at least 1,000 followers or a Verified Business Account. The same page says links that open other social apps are no longer supported, so the link should go to your own site. TikTok’s business-account features page also lists destination links on videos and profiles for Verified Business Accounts, and notes that features vary by market.

Then make the link do one job:

    • One destination. The video’s advice is one link in your bio, pointing to your own website. Every extra choice is another chance to lose someone.
    • A bio line that names the offer. “Visit my website” is weak. “Free pricing worksheet for freelancers” with an arrow pointing down at the link tells people exactly what they get.
    • A tracked URL. Add UTM parameters such as ?utm_source=tiktok&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=bio so your web analytics can separate TikTok visitors from everyone else. It’s the only reliable way to count bio clicks on your side.

If you’re working the same funnel on other platforms, the bio and link logic carries over. See the Instagram version in how to turn Instagram followers into email subscribers and the LinkedIn version in how to grow your email list on LinkedIn.

Step 3: What should the landing page do?

A TikTok visitor arrives on a phone, from a video they watched seconds ago, with no idea what the rest of your site is about. The landing page has one job: confirm they’re in the right place and get the email address.

    • Match the promise. Use the same words for the offer that you used in the video and the bio.
    • Put the form where the thumb is. Headline, one or two lines on what they get, then the form, all on the first screen of a phone.
    • Ask for as little as possible. An email address, and a first name only if you’ll actually use it.
    • Say what happens next. What they’ll receive, how often you’ll email and how to unsubscribe.
    • Remove the exits. No full site menu, no social icons that send them back to the feed.

The offer matters more than the design. If you don’t have one yet, start with the lead magnets that still work, and pick the one closest to what your best-performing videos already teach.

Step 4: How do you make the signup permission-based?

A follow, a like or a comment is not consent to email. The only people who belong on the list are the ones who typed their address into your form and agreed to what you said you’d send. That’s the ethical line, and it’s also what keeps your mail out of the spam folder.

    • Make the yes explicit. No pre-checked boxes, and a sentence next to the button that says what they’re signing up for.
    • Consider double opt-in. A confirmation email filters out typos and fake addresses, which matters when traffic comes from a fast-scrolling feed. The tradeoffs are in our double opt-in definition.
    • Follow the rules from the first email. The FTC’s CAN-SPAM guide says every commercial email needs a valid physical postal address and that opt-outs must be honored within 10 business days. Yahoo asks senders to honor unsubscribes within 2 days.
    • Plan for the inbox providers. Google’s sender guidelines require bulk senders (5,000 or more messages a day to Gmail) to authenticate with SPF, DKIM and DMARC and to offer one-click unsubscribe, and tell all senders to keep spam rates below 0.10% and never reach 0.30%. Set up authentication before the list grows; our SPF, DKIM and DMARC guide walks through it.

If you run paid campaigns, TikTok’s Lead Generation objective can collect leads with an Instant Form or send people to your own website. TikTok’s Instant Form help page lists real-time CRM sync, so connect it to your email platform rather than exporting leads by hand, and the same consent rules apply.

Step 5: What should the welcome email say?

The welcome email is where a TikTok viewer decides whether you’re a creator they watched once or a person worth hearing from. Send it automatically, within minutes, while they still remember the video.

    • Deliver the promise first. The worksheet, the guide or the discount goes in the first lines, not under three paragraphs of introduction.
    • Name where they came from. A line that references the video tells them this isn’t a random list.
    • Set expectations. What you’ll send next and how often, so the second email isn’t a surprise.
    • Ask for a reply. One question about what they’re working on starts a conversation and gives you your next video ideas.

For subject lines, structure and a full sequence, see welcome emails that convert. To automate it, start with the first automations a solopreneur should set up.

    Where does TikTok LIVE fit?

In the video I call LIVE a highly effective tactic, and the method is simple: while you’re talking with viewers, remind them every so often that the resource you’re discussing is behind the link in your bio. Repeat it consistently and the signups add up.

Check eligibility first. TikTok’s LIVE page says you need to be at least 18 and have 1,000 followers to go LIVE, and that the follower requirement may vary across regions. I haven’t found a TikTok help page that documents sharing clickable links inside a LIVE, so plan around the bio link and say it out loud.

    What should you measure?

One number per step, compared with your own previous 30 days. Published averages vary too much by audience and offer to tell you whether your funnel works, so the useful question is which step got worse. For context on industry-wide numbers, see our email marketing benchmarks.

What to measure at each step of the TikTok-to-email funnel
MetricWhere to find itHow to calculate itWhat it tells you
Profile viewsTikTok analytics (Overview)Compare week over weekWhether your videos make people curious about you.
Bio link clicksYour web analytics, filtered by your TikTok UTM tagsLink clicks ÷ profile viewsWhether your bio and spoken CTA give a reason to leave the app.
Landing page conversionYour landing page or email platformSignups ÷ landing page visits from TikTokWhether the offer matches what the video promised.
Confirmed subscribersYour email platformConfirmations ÷ signups (with double opt-in)Whether signups are real people who want the email.
Welcome email clicksYour email platformClicks ÷ welcome emails deliveredWhether the first email delivers on the promise.
Unsubscribes and spam complaintsYour email platform; Gmail Postmaster Tools for spam ratePer send, first 30 days after signupWhether TikTok is bringing the right people and the email matches the offer.

TikTok’s Creator Academy lists profile views in its analytics overview. The TikTok help pages we checked don’t document a website-click metric, which is why bio link clicks come from your own UTM-tagged analytics.

What do you need from an email platform for this?

Less than you’d think. For a TikTok funnel, check four things:

    • A hosted landing page or a form you can embed on a mobile-friendly page.
    • A double opt-in setting you can switch on or off.
    • An automated welcome email that sends the moment someone confirms.
    • A way to tag subscribers by source or signup form, so TikTok signups are labeled.

Most platforms cover these, but plan limits differ and change. Compare free plans and their caps in the best free email marketing software, see creator-focused picks in the best email platforms for creators, or line up 19 platforms side by side in the email platform comparison chart.

    Carlos Gil’s Take

I’ve been in marketing for more than 15 years, and the pattern doesn’t change: a platform hands out reach while it’s growing, then charges for it once it isn’t. TikTok still rewards good content with strangers’ attention, and you should take every bit of it. Just don’t mistake the attention for the asset. Post for the feed, write for the inbox, and make the bridge between them so clear nobody has to think about crossing it.

TikTok can introduce you to a million people. Only your list lets you say hello twice.

    Frequently Asked Questions

According to TikTok's Support page, you can add a website link to your profile if you have at least 1,000 followers or a Verified Business Account. Until then, keep growing with the content framework below, say your site name in your videos and make it easy to search for. TikTok's business features page also lists destination links on videos and profiles for Verified Business Accounts, with availability that varies by market.

Not in the way the video describes. The ban discussion in the video reflects the period after Congress passed the Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act in April 2024, which the Supreme Court upheld in January 2025. On January 23, 2026, TikTok announced a majority American-owned U.S. joint venture. Treat the video's ban segment as history. The reason to build a list doesn't depend on it: any platform can change its reach or your account overnight.

A landing page built for TikTok visitors. A homepage asks a new visitor to choose between everything you do. A landing page that repeats the promise from your video and shows one signup form asks them to make one decision. If you use a link-in-bio page because you sell several things, put the email offer first.

Add UTM parameters to your bio link (for example utm_source=tiktok&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=bio) so your web analytics separates TikTok visits from everything else. Then use a dedicated signup form or a source tag in your email platform so subscribers from TikTok are labeled at signup. TikTok's analytics show profile views; the TikTok help pages we checked don't document a website-click metric, so measure link clicks on your own site.

Yes, as a paid option. TikTok's Lead Generation objective can collect leads with an Instant Form or send people to your own website. TikTok's Instant Form help page lists real-time CRM sync, so connect the form to your email platform instead of exporting leads by hand, and make the consent wording on the form match the emails you'll actually send.
