Beehiiv vs Substack

Substack and Beehiiv are both newsletter platforms, but they have fundamentally different business models and philosophies. Substack is a social media-like network where writers publish and readers discover content. It's free to use but takes 10% of all paid subscription revenue — forever.

Beehiiv is a professional newsletter toolkit built for operators who want full control. It charges a flat monthly fee (or $0 on the free plan) and takes 0% of your revenue. You own your domain, your brand, and your subscriber relationships.

This is the single biggest difference. Substack keeps 10% of each subscription payment for as long as you charge on the platform, and Stripe adds its card fee (2.9% + $0.30 per US card payment) plus a 0.7% Billing fee on recurring payments. beehiiv takes 0% of paid-subscription revenue, but paid subscriptions need a paid plan, which starts at $59 a month (Lite, monthly billing) and rises with your list. Stripe’s processing fees apply on both.

The break-even is simple: Substack costs less while 10% of your paid revenue is below beehiiv’s plan price. At 1,000 subscribers that’s about $590 a month in paid revenue; above it, beehiiv is cheaper, and the gap widens as revenue grows. Billed annually, beehiiv Lite is $49, $95, $119 and $169 a month at these sizes. If you don’t charge at all, Substack is free and beehiiv’s Free plan covers up to 2,500 subscribers.

beehiiv’s paid plans include custom domains, so your newsletter can live at yournewsletter.com, and its website builder gives you more control over design and branding. Pro removes beehiiv branding.

Substack also supports a custom domain, for a one-time $50 fee, but design is limited to Substack’s layouts, and much of your growth runs through Substack’s app and network. That simplicity is the appeal for many writers; the trade-off is that more of your brand experience is Substack’s.

This is Substack's strongest advantage. Substack Notes (their social feed), the Substack app, and the recommendation system create a built-in discovery engine that can drive organic subscribers to your newsletter. Many writers have grown their audience significantly through Substack's network effects alone.

beehiiv's paid recommendations (formerly Boosts, on Lite and up; beehiiv takes 20%) offer paid cross-promotion, which is effective but different — it's a marketplace rather than an organic social network. For new writers with no existing audience, Substack's discovery features can provide a meaningful head start. For established creators, Beehiiv's tools become more valuable.

Substack’s monetization centers on paid subscriptions: monthly, annual and founding-member tiers, plus group subscriptions. It has also started a native sponsorships program: publications that are Substack Bestsellers or have at least 100 paid subscribers can publish a Creator Kit (a media kit) so Substack can match them with brands. There’s no self-serve ad network.

beehiiv offers three monetization paths on Lite and up: the Ad Network (ad revenue from your free readers), paid recommendations (formerly Boosts; beehiiv takes 20%), and premium subscriptions (with 0% platform fee). This diversified revenue model means you can monetize your entire audience — not just the small percentage willing to pay for subscriptions.

beehiiv’s paid plans add automations, segmentation, subject-line A/B testing, polls, a referral program, webhooks and an API. Substack is intentionally simpler: welcome emails, a referral program with rewards, surveys and subscriber stats, but no workflow builder.

If you need multi-step automated sequences or want to segment by engagement, beehiiv is the stronger fit. Substack suits writers who want to write and publish with minimal setup.

Choose Beehiiv if you're serious about building a newsletter business. Once your paid revenue passes the break-even above, the 0% revenue share alone justifies the switch, and the growth tools, analytics, automation, and brand control give you everything you need to scale professionally.

Choose Substack if you're a writer who wants the simplest possible experience and values Substack's built-in social discovery network. It's a good starting point for new writers who don't yet have an audience — but plan to migrate to Beehiiv once you outgrow Substack's limitations.
